New starter alert! Meet Leah Kmiec

The only non-recruiter in the Creative Natives crew, Leah is our new Content Marketing Specialist and is here to shake things up! She’s located in our Melbourne office and is ready to get stuck into all things content.

We sat down and had a chat with Leah so you can get to know her a little better.

What do you do at Creative Natives?

I’m Creative Native’s only non-recruiter (so far). I’m the Content Marketing Specialist and Chief Spelling & Grammar Officer (the team have yet to find that second part out). The team are ace at creating content for their own personal brands, but I’m here to do it for the Creative Natives brand – and to tell the team when they’re using the wrong colours or fonts.

Why did you want to join the Creative Natives team?

It seemed like a cool place to work (can confirm) and they were looking for someone who could help them up their content game. Writing and creating content is my passion, so it was kinda a no-brainer. Plus all of the good stuff Creative Natives do – freelance for good, helping parents get back into the workforce, trying to become a B Corp – really resonated with me.

On a scale of 1-10, what are your creativity levels like?

I’ve just talked about how I love to write and create, so I better have a high number! I would say I’m a seven or eight. Outside of creating content at work, I indulge my creative side by baking and decorating cakes and cupcakes.

If you could be a guest on any podcast, what would it be and why?

The Netty Life. They cover Australian netball, both the domestic league and international games. Their tagline is “where netball is life”, and netball is a huge part of my life. If I have a willing audience, I can talk netball non-stop, so that would be the perfect place!

What are you watching/listening to/reading right now?

Watching – Avatar: The Book of Korra. It’s a cartoon, but honestly, it’s more for adults than kids. I’m watching it with my partner and he only wants to watch a couple of episodes at time and I want to binge it and it’s infuriating! Also, the prequel show, Avatar: The Last Airbender is awesome – 10/10 recommend.

Listening to – Taylor Swift, always. Podcast-wise, I’m listening to the West Wing Weekly, it’s a West Wing TV show rewatch podcast. If you love the West Wing, this is the podcast for you.

Reading – I have about five books on the go right now, but I just finished One Italian Summer by Pip Williams (who wrote the Dictionary of Lost Words – amazing book). It’s her memoir of her family uprooting their life in the Adelaide Hills and moving to Italy for four months in search of la dolce vita. It makes me want to go to Italy soooo badly!

Cats or dogs?

Dogs, especially the oodle kind. However I don’t want a dog for forever – I want to give them back after a couple of days. Give me the cuddles and pats minus the responsibility please.

What’s the best holiday you’ve been on? 

In 2019, I quit my job and went travelling for five months. I flew to China, hung out in Beijing, got on the Trans-Mongolian Railway, spent a week in Mongolia (which was awesome, but not for the faint of heart), a few days in Siberia and then four days on the train going across Russia before hitting Moscow and then, Europe. I criss-crossed my way around Europe, went to the Netball World Cup in Liverpool, ate a lot of ice cream, rode a bike wherever I could and fell in love with the former Yugoslavia region, but especially Slovenia. Its natural beauty and stellar environmental credentials stole my heart.

Do you have a hidden talent? 

Trivia. My brain is full of facts that are only useful when I’m at a trivia night and not at any other time – anyone need a trivia team mate? 

Also, I don’t have any travel agent experience, but I’m pretty good at planning holidays for other people.
