NOT SO FAST: Things to consider before changing jobs

Deciding to leave your job is a big step in your career. We talk to a lot of candidates who want to jump ship as soon as things get rocky. They mention changes in management and processes, pay not keeping up with inflation, lack of flexibility, and feeling stuck in their role, among other reasons . All of us have definitely experienced one or the other at some point in our careers and we admit, it’s easy to get carried away. When we focus on all the cons, changing jobs seems like the logical choice. The grass is always greener on the other side, right? Well, not always.

If you keep chasing the next best thing, you’ll never be happy where you are. Yeah, you might be getting paid more in that other job, but say goodbye to your stress free weekends. You might not have to deal with process and management changes every week, but it won’t be the same without your work bestie. You might have that shiny new job title, but is that really the path you want to take in your career?

Before changing jobs, slow down, pause, take a breath, and consider these points;

 

Understand your motivation

Understanding your motivation is the first step. Knowing your reasons will help you target the right opportunities. Before you craft that resignation letter, keep a journal of your work day. This will help you reflect on what you have and haven’t enjoyed in your current role.

Key questions:

  • What do I enjoy about my current role?
  • What are the pain points that make me want to leave?
  • Am I getting the Sunday scaries?

 

Evaluate your current position

Before changing jobs, assess your current role. Is leaving the only answer? Sometimes, a conversation with your manager about career development or a lateral move within the company might solve your issues without needing to leave.

Key questions:

  • Have I discussed pain points with my manager?
  • Is there a culture of learning and development in the business?
  • Does the company have a track record in promoting people from within?

 

Be honest with yourself

Acknowledge which chapter of life you’re in and what your genuine priorities are. For some, it may be more responsibility and for others, it may be more flexibility – being clear on this is super important.

Score the following 1 to 10 in terms of your current priorities, one being low, 10 being high:

  • Career development
  • Financial package
  • Flexibility
  • Needing a new challenge

 

Research potential employers

Once you’ve worked out what your key priorities are, start thinking about the exact type of business you’re looking for. Learn the pros and cons of different workplaces – check out our blog here. List your ideal role and try to get as close to it as possible. Look beyond the job description and understand the company’s culture, mission, and values. This alignment is vital in the long run.

Key questions:

  • Does the purpose of the business align with my values?
  • What is my bigger goal and does this opportunity complement it?
  • What is the average tenure of the team? LinkedIn can provide company reports
  • Is the industry/sector currently in a growth or decline – is now the right time to move into this space?

 

Trust your gut

  • Do I feel confident about making the change?
  • Does the thought of the new job bring more anxiety than excitement?
