Generalist vs Specialist Marketer: How to Future-Proof your Performance Career
The days of sitting comfortably and tweaking bids on paid search or socials are over. Between AI tearing up the rulebook and search engines transforming into native chat tools, the performance marketing landscape is shifting fast. It’s time to change strategy if you rely on pulling the same platform levers.
We want to unpack what a future-proof performance marketer looks like today. So, our very own performance marketing expert, Brooke Barrett sat down with Hatched Media head of performance, Claire Farrugia to get into the nitty gritty of it all.
Leverage on your strategy
You can’t fake platform knowledge. Knowing how to execute day-to-day tasks is the cost of entry but the real magic happens when you understand the why behind the setup.
Once you have one to two years of platform experience, it’s time to think about next steps.
- The standard marketer asks: “How is my Meta campaign performing?”
- The future-proof marketer asks: “How is my channel impacting organic search, and how are our business financials being impacted by this platform data?”
Moving up the ranks requires strong business expertise. You need to be comfortable looking beyond pure platform metrics and speaking to the broader business strategy. If you can connect those commercial dots for a client, you become irreplaceable.
“Plus One” skills
You’ve probably been told to become a T-shaped marketer: deep expertise in one specific channel with a broad, surface-level understanding of everything else. Claire challenges that idea. Although it’s a great place to start, the most valuable marketers add deep and complementary layers to their toolkit over time. Think of it as building your “Plus One” skill set.
This might look like starting in paid search then deliberately mastering the email lifecycle. Next, you get under the hood of conversion rate optimisation (CRO). Take one of Claire’s recent internal hires who holds a Master’s in UX design. He runs ads, can audit a client’s website, host a UX 101 workshop, and fix the leaky bucket that is ruining the campaign’s conversion rate.
AI isn’t the enemy
Breaking into the industry with a junior role is getting harder. Because AI workflows automate basic entry-level execution tasks, fewer junior performance marketing positions are hitting the job boards.
There is a silver lining though. With AI handling the heavy lifting of day-to-day tasks, new marketers can access vast amounts of industry knowledge instantly. You can master the fundamentals at lightning speed, allowing you to focus on high-value strategy and creative problem-solving much earlier in your career. Take advantage of it!
Start creating demand
Historically, performance marketing’s been about efficiency. It was all about capturing existing demand at the lowest Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) humanly possible. But with the convergence of paid and organic search, alongside the rise of AI, things are changing.
Moving forward, your role will be less about capturing demand and far more about creating it. You need to understand the value of content, particularly User-Generated Content (UGC) and partnership ads, to build real brand equity. It’s about visibility in Large Language Models (LLMs) and ensuring your brand is cited positively across the entire digital ecosystem.
Curiosity and storytelling
When agency leaders look at candidates, they’re looking for two distinct things:
- Curiosity over credentials: Great managers look for people who stay up to date, look forward, and get excited about where the industry is heading.
- The ability to navigate the grey areas: Employers want to see how you balance multiple inputs to produce a sharp and strategic point of view. The best interview questions don’t have a single right answer. When asked something polarizing like, “What’s your approach to brand terms in Performance Max?”, the goal is to show the cogs turning in your brain.
Ultimately technical craft is great, but if you can’t tell a story with data and explain the commercial value of your work, it becomes redundant.
